Prince Andrew will relinquish all claim to title and honor, including his right to stylize himself as the Duke of York, following increased pressure stemming from his association with disgraced dead pedophile Jeffrey Epstein.
The Announcement
With Buckingham Palace citing ongoing allegations tied to Jeffrey Epstein, Prince Andrew, formerly stylized as the Duke of York, had opted to relinquish his claim to titles. Sarah Ferguson, who was married to the prince for a decade spanning the mid 80s and 90s, will also drop her use of Duchess of York, while their daughters, Beatrice and Eugenie are expected to keep their styles.
The Palace issued the following statement about the decision:
In discussion with The King, and my immediate and wider family, we have concluded the continued accusations about me distract from the work of His Majesty and the Royal Family. I have decided, as I always have, to put my duty to my family and country first. I stand by my decision five years ago to stand back from public life.
With His Majesty’s agreement, we feel I must now go a step further. I will therefore no longer use my title or the honours which have been conferred upon me. As I have said previously, I vigorously deny the accusations against me.
Enter Virginia Giuffre
Andrew’s predicament traces to his association with Jeffrey Epstein and to specific accusations brought by Virginia Giuffre. Giuffre alleged in U.S. civil filings that Andrew sexually abused her when she was a minor, which he has consistently denied.
Under oath and in civil filings in the United States, Virginia Giuffre alleged that Prince Andrew sexually abused her when she was 17 after Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell had trafficked her, allegations Andrew has denied.
The fallout accelerated after his 2019 BBC Newsnight interview, which was widely seen as damaging to his credibility and judgment. U.K. military patronages and public roles were suspended, and in 2022 he settled Giuffre’s civil lawsuit without admitting liability, paying an undisclosed sum and issuing a statement acknowledging her suffering and the need to support victims of sexual exploitation. U.S. authorities later said he was not a target of criminal prosecution, yet the reputational drag persisted as media scrutiny continued.
A mysterious and tragic suicide
Virginia Giuffre is alleged to have died by suicide in Western Australia in April 2025 at the age of 41, according to her family and multiple major outlets. Coverage of her death noted recent personal turmoil and underscored her role as a central voice against Epstein’s network, while confirming that authorities did not treat the death as suspicious.
A brief note on royal titles
The palace is using reputational triage to protect the institution, not the individual. By stepping back from the dukedom, Andrew sheds a public style that ties him to a city and to royal patronage networks, which lowers his visibility in court circulars, charity lists, and diplomatic programs. A dukedom is a Crown dignity, meaning a legal honor created by the Sovereign and held at the Sovereign’s pleasure, so giving it up changes how he is styled and received rather than his bloodline. In practice this means no formal use of “Duke of York,” no seating or precedence attached to that title, and no routine appearance as a working royal under that label. He remains a prince by birth, which is a status conferred by lineage, but without the dukedom he presents as a private royal relative rather than a titled public figure, which reduces collateral damage to the monarchy’s brand during a controversy cycle.
