Two surviving officers remain in critical condition

Three law enforcement officers were killed and two others critically wounded in a devastating ambush shooting Wednesday afternoon in York County, Pennsylvania, marking one of the deadliest days for Pennsylvania police this century.

The officers were serving a warrant related to a domestic violence investigation when a gunman opened fire from a nearby cornfield in North Codorus Township around 2:10 p.m. The suspect, who authorities have not yet identified, was shot and killed by police during the encounter.

Four of the officers were from the Northern York Regional Police Department, while the fifth was a York County sheriff’s deputy. Pennsylvania State Police Commissioner Christopher Paris confirmed that three officers died from their injuries, while two survivors remain in critical but stable condition at WellSpan York Hospital.

CNN, others, ignore shooting in favor of Kimmel coverage

This is a tragic and developing story, and it’s one that you might have missed if you were beholden to the mainstream media, which spent much of last evening’s broadcast bemoaning the cancellation of late-night host Jimmy Kimmel.

The warrant was being served on an ex-boyfriend who had been stalking his former girlfriend. On Tuesday, the woman had observed the suspect stalking her home from a nearby cornfield and reported the incident to police, prompting officers to obtain an arrest warrant and restraining order.

When officers attempted to serve the warrant Tuesday night, they were unable to locate the suspect. On Wednesday, law enforcement returned for a follow-up visit when the gunman, wearing camouflage and lying in wait in the cornfield, opened fire on the approaching officers.

The attack unfolded in two phases. The shooter first struck and killed three Northern York Regional Police officers as they approached the scene. He then moved toward the farmhouse where he engaged three York County sheriff’s deputies. Two deputies were wounded in the exchange, but one was able to return fire, ultimately killing the suspect.

Witness Dave Miller, who lives across the street from the shooting scene, described hearing “many, many gunshots” and seeing officers on the ground. “It was at least 30 shots, and it went on for quite a while. It wasn’t a quick ordeal,” Miller told local media.

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, visibly shaken during a news conference at the hospital, called it “an absolutely tragic and devastating day for York County and for the entire Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.” He met with the families of the fallen officers, praising their strength during an unimaginable tragedy.

“This kind of violence is not OK. We need to do better as a society,” Shapiro said. “We need to help the people who think that picking up a gun, picking up a weapon is the answer to resolving disputes.”

The FBI and ATF are assisting Pennsylvania State Police with the investigation. The shooting scene spans multiple locations throughout York County, and investigators worked through the night gathering evidence.

Pennsylvania State Police have taken over calls for service for the Northern York Regional Police Department to support the grieving agency. The attack represents one of the most significant losses of law enforcement life in Pennsylvania since 2009, when three Pittsburgh officers were ambushed and killed while responding to a domestic disturbance call.

Authorities have not yet released the names of the fallen officers or the two survivors, citing the ongoing investigation and respect for the families. The community has begun leaving flowers at the Northern York Regional Police Department headquarters as condolences pour in from law enforcement agencies across the region.

This tragedy marks the second deadly police shooting in York County this year, following the February death of Officer Andrew Duarte, who was killed during a hospital hostage standoff.
