1763 – Benjamin Franklin presented the Albany Plan of Union, one of the earliest proposals to unite the American colonies under a central government. Though it didn’t pass, the plan brought colonial leaders together in Albany, New York, and set an early precedent for cooperation among the colonies and foreshadowing the constitutional framework they would eventually adopt.

1775 – As newly appointed Commander-in-Chief, George Washington was busy establishing military structure and discipline. On July 10, 1775, he issued General Orders to officers and court-martial procedures, reminding them of their obligations and encouraging fidelity and courage in the fledgling Continental Army.

1782 – Washington wrote to aide John Laurens, expressing frustration that South Carolina and Georgia refused to form emancipated slave regiments, despite the Continental Congress’ recommendation. Washington supported the idea and joined with figures like Benjamin Lincoln and Nathanael Greene in backing compensation and freedom for former enslaved soldiers

1798 – President John Adams signed the Sedition Act into law.
