The U.S. Army will jettison parts of its Next Generation Command and Control system following the largest operational test of the prototype network, a move officials say validates a new acquisition strategy aimed at fielding effective technology for American soldiers while abandoning contractors that fall short.

During the Project Convergence Capstone exercise at Fort Irwin, California, nearly 10,000 soldiers and close to 100 new technologies were put through a desert combat scenario. The intended centerpiece, NGC2—a system developed with firms including Anduril and Palantir to streamline battlefield data and incorporate artificial intelligence for planning—faced the harsh conditions of the Mojave Desert. The intense heat proved a decisive factor, causing some commercially-sourced hardware to fail outright.

"We're gonna have some failures out here in the desert, and that's good," said Gen. Christopher LaNeve, the Army vice chief of staff. "If there is something out here that's not living up to what has been advertised, we're going to walk away from that."

Army officials specifically noted that duplicative software applications and overheating antennas were among the failures. Soldiers were forced to improvise field-expedient fixes, placing ice-water-soaked T-shirts on equipment to restore function, a stark indicator of the gap between vendor promises and operational reality. This direct rejection of underperforming tech represents a cost-savings measure for American taxpayers, ensuring the service's $3.9 billion budget request for NGC2 development is not sunk into dead-end corporate projects.

The successful elements—a core consisting of a data layer, applications, and transport infrastructure—will now be scaled to additional units for accelerated training. Army officials state that lessons learned will shorten the adoption cycle for new units, a critical factor for maintaining American military primacy. The program's commercial, off-the-shelf approach is being heralded as a model for breaking from slow, traditional defense contracting that often locks the Pentagon into expensive, outdated systems.
