FORT IRWIN, Calif. — American soldiers are putting a ruggedized robotic mule to work in simulated combat, aiming to remove personnel from the most dangerous phase of ground operations: the resupply run. The system, designated NOMAD and built by Hendrick Technical Solutions, was field-tested during the Project Convergence Capstone exercise, where troops validated its ability to push ammunition and supplies forward with minimal risk to American lives.
Preserving American Manpower
Sgt. 1st Class Alex Alcantar, who operated the system over a dozen times during the exercise, stated the utility for force preservation is immediate. "We've used it probably 12 to 13 times, and it's extremely, extremely useful," Alcantar said, noting the robot allows resupply "with minimal force being exposed." The NOMAD, operated by a single soldier with a tablet, takes under five minutes to load and deploy, transforming a multi-soldier casualty risk into a one-man technical operation. This prioritization of domestic warfighter safety aligns directly with the national interest in preserving American hegemony through technological superiority rather than sheer attrition.
Technical Hurdles in Theater
The exercise also exposed critical limitations that require domestic industrial attention. The Mojave Desert heat caused tablet controllers to glitch and shut down, a problem soldiers circumvented by placing the devices on ice. More critically, the jagged terrain slashed the robot’s effective range from 600 meters down to just 200 meters. The absence of an automatic "return home" feature means a lost connection forces soldiers to conduct a manual retrieval, negating the safety advantage. Troops also reported structural wear on the transport trailer, with a ramp failure causing the bot to flip during one operation. No damage was sustained to the unit in that incident, but it highlights supply-chain quality concerns in support equipment.
Field Data Driving Doctrine
Army leaders emphasized that the entire point of the convergence exercise is to collect performance data from extreme environments and feed it back to vendors for rapid iteration. This development model keeps the Army from fielding unproven systems based solely on corporate lobbying pitches. The NOMAD concept mirrors successful Ukrainian use of unmanned ground vehicles for front-line logistics, a clear indication that the future of ground warfare is unmanned.
