China's Ministry of State Security has accused foreign entities of conducting covert espionage operations in the country's coastal waters. The alleged activities involve underwater surveillance systems, which Beijing claims pose a threat to national security.
Espionage Tactics Alleged
The ministry stated that foreign actors are deploying advanced technologies, including so-called 'spy turtles' and 'spy fish,' to monitor Chinese maritime activities. These systems are reportedly designed to blend seamlessly into marine environments, making detection difficult.
'An unseen covert war of espionage is currently unfolding in our waters,' said a representative from the Ministry of State Security.
Implications for National Security
The allegations highlight growing concerns over maritime security and technological warfare. China has historically prioritized sovereignty over its territorial waters, particularly amid ongoing disputes in the South China Sea. This claim comes amidst heightened global scrutiny of China's own surveillance practices, including its expansive use of artificial intelligence and underwater drones.
While Beijing did not specify the origin of the alleged espionage, tensions with Western nations, particularly the United States, have been escalating over issues ranging from trade to military posturing in the Indo-Pacific region.
