Senator John Fetterman (D-Pa.) has publicly criticized the ongoing partial government shutdown impacting Department of Homeland Security (DHS) funding, particularly its effect on Transportation Security Administration (TSA) workers. Fetterman expressed his frustration on national television, stating he refuses to be part of the 'mess' created by the shutdown.

Fetterman emphasized the hardships faced by TSA agents, who missed their first full paycheck earlier this month. 'They earn, average, about $50,000 a year,' Fetterman said. 'They rely on their paychecks. Now, even not being paid, they have to face those crowds.'

Impact on Airports and Workers

The shutdown has led to significant disruptions at airports, with long lines reported in major hubs including New York, New Jersey, Atlanta, and Houston. Many TSA agents have called out from work, seeking temporary employment elsewhere to make ends meet. Fetterman called for an immediate resolution to the shutdown, arguing that the American public and workers are the ones who suffer the most.

'I just can't imagine why we want to continue these things. Just like the last shutdown, the only people that [lose] are the workers and America,' Fetterman stated.

In response to the escalating situation at airports, President Donald Trump announced that ICE agents would be deployed to assist TSA agents in managing the staffing shortages. This move, however, has been met with mixed reactions, particularly concerning the directive for ICE agents to work without masks during their deployment.
