House Republicans Advance Budget Reconciliation for Iran War Funding
House Budget Committee Chairman Jodey Arrington (R-TX) announced plans Wednesday to push a second budget reconciliation package aimed at funding President Donald Trump's Iran campaign. The proposed measure would also include anti-fraud provisions to offset the anticipated defense spending.
It's an opportunity to solve two problems and address two challenges and advance two great causes: fund the military, provide a strong defense, win the war, achieve the objectives, and do it in a way that doesn't put our kids further in the hole,
Arrington told reporters. The Trump administration has floated a $200 billion request to fund the Iran war effort, though no formal proposal has been submitted.
Republicans view budget reconciliation as the only viable path to advance the funding given expected Democratic opposition. The process allows the GOP to bypass the Senate's 60-vote requirement and pass legislation with a simple majority. Arrington emphasized unity within the party, stating, I think funding our military in a time of war, if there’s no sense of urgency and accountability from members of Congress to support our commander in chief, I can’t think of one.
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) expressed support for the effort, highlighting the need to secure funding for military operations and anti-fraud measures. While details remain unresolved, the reconciliation package could face challenges within the GOP's narrow majority, requiring near-unanimous support for passage.
