President Donald Trump's decision to deploy Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents to US airports has sparked backlash from congressional Democrats as the partial government shutdown approaches its 40th day. The move comes as Transportation Security Administration (TSA) agents struggle with staffing shortages and missed paychecks, raising concerns about airport security and traveler safety.
Democratic Pushback
Rep. Veronica Escobar, D-Texas, condemned the ICE deployment, stating, 'There’s absolutely no reason for him to do that.' Escobar argued that Congress should prioritize separating TSA funding from the ongoing gridlock over Department of Homeland Security (DHS) appropriations. Similarly, Rep. Adelita Grijalva, D-Ariz., criticized the plan, claiming ICE agents lack the necessary training for airport security duties and could exacerbate tensions at travel hubs.
'I think it's a horrible, horrible idea that's just going to cause more problems,' Grijalva said.
Funding Standoff
The shutdown stems from Democrats' demands for ICE reforms, including restrictions on enforcement practices, which Republicans argue would undermine immigration enforcement. With TSA funding tied to the DHS budget, over 366 TSA agents have reportedly left the agency, and remaining staff missed their first full paychecks on March 13. Trump's ICE deployment aims to address security gaps, but critics warn it may further strain resources and deter international travelers.
