Iran has announced it will require shipping companies to pay tolls in cryptocurrency for oil tankers traversing the Strait of Hormuz. This move comes during a two-week ceasefire, as Iran seeks to maintain control over the strategically vital waterway.
Monitoring the Strait
Hamid Hosseini, a spokesperson for Iran’s Oil, Gas and Petrochemical Products Exporters’ Union, stated that Iran intends to collect tolling fees from every tanker passing through the strait. Each ship will be assessed to ensure compliance. Hosseini emphasized that Iran needs to monitor all movements in and out of the strait to prevent the transfer of weapons during the ceasefire period.
Iran needs to monitor what goes in and out of the strait to ensure these two weeks aren’t used for transferring weapons.
The imposition of cryptocurrency tolls highlights Iran's efforts to exert sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global oil shipments. This development raises concerns about the potential impact on international trade and the broader implications for maritime security in the region.
