Iran launched a missile barrage targeting Israel on Sunday, escalating tensions in the Middle East and complicating ongoing diplomatic efforts to broker a ceasefire. The Iranian Revolutionary Guard confirmed the attack, stating it was retaliation for Israeli strikes on Beirut earlier in the day. Israel’s military reported intercepting the missiles and advised citizens to remain near shelters despite lifting immediate alerts.
Regional Retaliation
Earlier on Sunday, Israel conducted a strike on southern Beirut, killing two people and injuring 20, according to Lebanon’s health ministry. Israel claimed the strike was in response to Hezbollah’s attacks on northern Israeli towns. Iran’s Revolutionary Guard warned that repeated aggression would result in broader retaliatory actions against American and Israeli targets across the region.
‘Iran has made a grave mistake,’ said Brig. Gen. Effie Defrin, an Israeli military spokesman.
U.S. Response
U.S. President Donald Trump, in an interview with Fox News, expressed dissatisfaction with Israel’s uncoordinated strike on Beirut and urged Iran to cease missile launches and return to negotiations. The U.S. Central Command reaffirmed its readiness across the region as tensions mounted.
Ceasefire Complications
The missile attack comes just days after Lebanon and Israel tentatively agreed to a ceasefire mediated by the U.S. However, Hezbollah rejected the deal and continues to demand that any broader ceasefire include Lebanon’s situation. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu remains committed to pressuring Hezbollah until it no longer poses a threat.
As mediation efforts continue, Iran maintains its grip on the Strait of Hormuz, while the U.S. blockade disrupts Iranian shipments of oil, natural gas, and fertilizer, further straining the global economy.
