Iran has formally responded to the latest U.S. ceasefire proposal, urging that negotiations prioritize a permanent end to the conflict across all fronts, including Lebanon and maritime security, according to state-run media reports on Sunday. The U.S. proposal had included terms to cease hostilities, reopen the Strait of Hormuz, and address Iran's nuclear program, though Tehran has indicated it prefers to delay discussions on its nuclear activities.
Ceasefire Under Strain Despite Diplomatic Efforts
The fragile ceasefire was tested over the weekend as drone attacks targeted ships and airspace in the Gulf region. A drone ignited a small fire on a ship off Qatar, while the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait reported unidentified drones entering their airspace. The UAE attributed the attack to Iran, though no casualties were reported, and no group claimed responsibility.
The Qatari Foreign Ministry condemned the incident as a 'dangerous and unacceptable escalation that threatens the security and safety of maritime trade routes and vital supplies in the region.'
Sticking Points in Negotiations
A key obstacle in the negotiations is Iran's stockpile of highly enriched uranium. The International Atomic Energy Agency reports that Iran possesses over 440 kilograms of uranium enriched to 60% purity, nearing weapons-grade levels. Iran's military has stated it is on 'full readiness' to defend its nuclear sites, citing concerns over potential theft or infiltration.
Meanwhile, the U.S. has imposed a blockade on Iranian ports and struck Iranian oil tankers attempting to breach it, escalating tensions. Iran's Revolutionary Guard Navy has warned that any attack on its vessels would result in a 'heavy assault' on U.S. bases or ships in the region.
Pakistan Continues Mediation Efforts
Pakistan, which facilitated recent face-to-face talks between the U.S. and Iran, remains committed to mediation. Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif engaged in discussions with Qatari counterparts, while the Pakistani army chief emphasized Islamabad's dedication to resolving the conflict.
