Iran has issued threats to target critical desalination infrastructure across the Middle East, potentially triggering a regional water crisis and global economic disruption, according to Kaveh Madani, an Iranian scientist and U.N. official. Madani stated that these strikes could occur "within the next few days," escalating tensions with the U.S. and Israel.
Escalating Tensions
The threats follow President Donald Trump's warning that the U.S. would strike Iranian power infrastructure unless the Strait of Hormuz is reopened within 48 hours. A spokesperson for Iran's Central Headquarters of Hazrat Khatam al-Anbiya warned that any such attack would result in retaliatory strikes on U.S. and regional energy, information technology, and desalination infrastructure.
"The driest region of the world might see a real water war, but the knock-on effects on the world’s economy, including the U.S., will be both immediate and lasting," Madani said.
Critical Infrastructure at Risk
Desalination plants, which convert seawater into drinkable water, are vital for water supply in arid regions like Israel and the Gulf states. Madani emphasized that damage to these facilities, along with already fragile water infrastructure, could have "catastrophic and lasting" consequences.
Iranian parliament speaker Mohammad-Bagher Ghalibaf reiterated the regime's threats on social media, warning that critical infrastructure in the region would be "irreversibly destroyed," leading to long-term increases in oil prices.
Global Implications
Madani noted that Iran, despite being less reliant on desalination, is targeting these facilities to exploit the vulnerabilities of its adversaries. He warned that such attacks could lead to a humanitarian disaster as millions lose access to water and electricity, with further increases in oil and gas prices.
Holly Dagres, a senior fellow at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, commented that the Iranian regime would prioritize appearing strong over addressing internal crises, even at the cost of severe domestic suffering.
