Meta has committed to building 10 gas-fired power plants to support its Hyperion AI data center complex in northeastern Louisiana, marking a substantial expansion from its initial plan. The facilities, funded by Meta in partnership with Entergy, will generate 7.5 gigawatts of power—enough to electrify more than 5 million homes and representing a 30% increase in Louisiana's total grid capacity.
Scaling Up AI Infrastructure
The Hyperion campus, spanning 3,650 acres in rural Richland Parish, is poised to become a cornerstone of Meta's AI ambitions. Originally announced as a $10 billion project, the venture has grown significantly, with total development costs now estimated at $27 billion. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has compared the campus's scale to a 'significant part of the footprint of Manhattan.'
'We are building foundations for the future of AI innovation right here in the United States,' said Rachel Peterson, Meta's vice president for data centers.
Powering the Future
The new power plants, costing nearly $11 billion, are part of a broader agreement that includes up to 2.5 gigawatts of renewable energy capacity and battery storage. Entergy, the Louisiana-based utility company, has emphasized that Meta will cover the costs, ensuring no burden on other ratepayers. However, critics warn that Louisiana taxpayers could face financial liabilities after the 15-year contractual period if Meta's power needs decrease.
Phillip May, Entergy Louisiana's president and CEO, framed the deal as a win for the state: 'This agreement reflects what’s possible when strong partners align around long-term growth and value.' The Louisiana Public Utility Commission must still approve the seven new plants, adding to the three already authorized last year.
As Meta accelerates its AI infrastructure expansion, the Hyperion campus underscores the growing energy demands of next-generation technology—and the economic trade-offs they entail for local communities.
