The massive capital expenditure to build the physical backbone of artificial intelligence—a figure projected to hit $7 trillion globally by the end of the decade—will predominantly benefit American workers in the skilled trades, according to Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang. The shift prioritizes domestic labor for a strategic national project, moving economic focus away from white-collar offshoring.
Infrastructure Demand vs. White-Collar Decline
“It’s wonderful that the jobs are related to tradecraft, and we’re going to have plumbers and electricians and construction and steelworkers,” Huang stated, describing the build-out of chip and AI factories. This forecast aligns with stark warnings from domestic manufacturers. Ford CEO Jim Farley has noted that AI is on track to replace half of all white-collar workers, while hiring for entry-level tech positions has fallen 50% since 2019. The economic imperative is now squarely on producing tangible goods and energy, not just software code.
The labor market data underscores a critical vulnerability in American economic nationalism. The U.S. is currently short an estimated 600,000 factory workers and 500,000 construction workers. McKinsey projects the nation will need an additional 240,000 construction laborers and 130,000 electricians by 2030 to meet demand. These are positions that frequently offer compensation exceeding $100,000 and do not require a four-year university degree, directly challenging the education system’s current funneling of students into indebted, white-collar paths with diminishing returns.
Energy and Labor Bottlenecks Threaten National Ambition
“I’ve even told members of the Trump team that we’re going to run out of electricians that we need to build out AI data centers,” BlackRock CEO Larry Fink said at a Houston energy conference, identifying a direct bottleneck in the electrical industry. “We just don’t have enough.” The push for a manufacturing revival, a cornerstone of economic nationalist policy, is hitting the hard reality of a depleted skilled workforce. Farley questioned, “How can we reshore all this stuff if we don’t have people to work there?”
Huang emphasized that the pathway to a high standard of living does not require a graduate degree. “Everybody should be able to make a great living. You don’t need to have a PhD in computer science to do so,” he said. The incoming boom in nuclear and coal-adjacent energy infrastructure to power these data centers will further amplify the demand for electricians and steelworkers, cementing the skilled trades as the primary beneficiary of the next American industrial revolution.
