The U.S. Department of Defense has embraced generative AI to expedite the preparation of hundreds of congressionally mandated reports, a process that previously required extensive staffing resources. Emil Michael, Pentagon Chief Technology Officer, revealed the initiative during a Hudson Institute event in Washington, D.C., on June 12.
AI Efficiency in Government Reporting
Michael emphasized that leveraging AI tools like Google Cloud’s Gemini for Government has enabled the Pentagon to draft reports in just five hours—work that traditionally took 200 hours of staffing time. "I have to report to Congress every year on this thing," Michael stated. "Let me load all the papers onto it and have it draft me a congressional report."

AI Deployment Across Military Branches
The Pentagon has made AI tools widely accessible across all six military branches through its GenAI.mil platform since December 2025. This move aligns with efforts to modernize defense operations while conserving resources. The adoption of AI reflects a broader trend within federal agencies to integrate advanced technology for administrative efficiency.
While the initiative aims to optimize reporting processes, it raises questions about the balance between automation and human oversight in critical national security documentation. The Pentagon’s reliance on AI underscores the growing role of technology in governance and its potential to reshape bureaucratic workflows.
