Secretary of State Marco Rubio and EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas clashed over U.S. policy toward Russia during a G7 foreign ministers meeting on Friday. The exchange, which took place in front of allied officials, highlighted growing tensions between the U.S. and European allies over the Ukraine war.
Critical Remarks Spark Tensions
Kallas, a former Estonian prime minister known for her hardline stance on Russia, criticized the U.S. for what she termed insufficient pressure on Moscow. She referenced Rubio's statement from a year prior, in which he warned that the U.S. would take stronger measures if Russia obstructed peace efforts. "A year has passed and Russia hasn't moved," Kallas reportedly said. "When is your patience going to run out?"
"We are doing the best we can to end the war. If you think you can do it better, go ahead. We will step aside," Rubio responded, visibly agitated.
Diplomatic Efforts Continue
After the heated exchange, several European ministers emphasized the importance of continued U.S. involvement in Russia-Ukraine diplomacy. Rubio and Kallas later held a brief private conversation to de-escalate the situation. A State Department official described the incident as a "frank exchange of views," underscoring the complexities of diplomatic negotiations.
European leaders have expressed unease over U.S.-led peace talks, particularly following recent U.S. actions that permit Russian oil sales despite soaring global prices. While Rubio denied any tensions during a press briefing, the incident underscores the challenges of aligning U.S. and European strategies in the ongoing conflict.
