Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer criticized President Donald Trump's decision to deploy U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents to airports nationwide, labeling the move as 'impulsive' and potentially destabilizing. Schumer made the remarks on the Senate floor, arguing that ICE agents lack the necessary training to handle airport security operations, which could exacerbate existing chaos.
'ICE agents who are untrained and have caused problems everywhere they've gone lurking at our airports. That's asking for trouble,' Schumer said.
The ICE deployment is part of Trump's broader strategy to pressure Democrats into approving funding for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which has been stalled amid a political standoff. Schumer accused Trump of making rash decisions without proper planning, stating, 'Some idea pops into his head and he announces it.'
Schumer also took aim at Trump's approach to Iran, describing the President's handling of the conflict as 'unhinged and dangerous.' He highlighted the lack of a clear plan, emphasizing the high stakes involved, including billions of dollars in expenditures and potential loss of life.
The ongoing DHS shutdown has left Transportation Security Administration (TSA) agents without pay for over a month, leading to widespread absenteeism and resignations. Trump has threatened to deploy ICE agents to assist TSA personnel, blaming Democrats for the funding impasse.
'ICE will be going to airports to help our wonderful TSA Agents who have stayed on the job despite the fact that the Radical Left Democrats are endangering the USA,' Trump wrote on Truth Social.
Despite Trump's assurances, Schumer and his allies remain opposed to the ICE deployment, calling for reforms to immigration enforcement before approving DHS funding. The standoff continues to impact airport operations nationwide, with no resolution in sight.
