President Donald Trump announced Tuesday that Iran has offered the United States a 'significant present' tied to the Strait of Hormuz, signaling a potential breakthrough in ongoing nuclear negotiations. Speaking in the Oval Office, Trump described the gesture as 'amazing' and 'worth a tremendous amount of money,' though he declined to disclose specifics beyond its connection to oil and gas.
'They're going to make a deal,' Trump told reporters. 'They did something [Monday] that was amazing, actually. They gave us a present. The present arrived today, and it was a very big present.'
Strait of Hormuz Remains Key Focus
The Strait of Hormuz, a critical global shipping choke point, has been a focal point of tensions between the U.S. and Iran. Reports indicate that Iran had previously charged tankers millions of dollars for passage. Trump emphasized that the U.S. will 'have control of anything we want' in the region.
'That meant one thing to me—we're dealing with the right people,' Trump said. 'It was a very nice thing they did. They said they were going to do it, and it happened. And they're the only ones that could have done it.'
Trump also reiterated that Iran has agreed to forgo nuclear weapons and enrichment, a cornerstone of U.S. demands. Negotiations are being led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice President JD Vance.
The development comes as the U.S. seeks to strengthen its bargaining position amid escalating tensions in the region. Details of the 'present' remain undisclosed, but its significance underscores a shift in Iran's approach to diplomacy.
