President Donald Trump has significantly increased U.S. military assets in the Middle East, deploying additional troops and warships to the region as tensions with Iran escalate. The USS George H. W. Bush aircraft carrier is en route to join the USS Gerald Ford and other naval forces already stationed near the Strait of Hormuz, a critical choke point for global oil shipments.
Military Buildup Signals Potential Escalation
According to Middle East expert Firas Maksad, managing director for the Middle East and North Africa practice at Eurasia Group, Trump’s latest deployments could set the stage for a decisive inflection point by mid-April. 'Every time the president has chosen to deploy military assets—whether it was in the 12-day war against Iran some year and a half ago, or whether it was against Maduro and Venezuela, and then the lead up to this war—he’s actually used those military assets once they’re in theater,' Maksad noted.
'The president is going to have to make a decision whether he wants to go all in or whether he wants to take an offramp,' Maksad told CNBC. 'Iran’s residual military capabilities and the energy impact on global markets will be key factors.'
Economic and Strategic Implications
Despite U.S. and Israeli efforts to degrade Iran’s military capabilities, Tehran retains significant control over the Strait of Hormuz, threatening global oil supplies. Asian countries, which rely heavily on Persian Gulf energy exports, have already begun rationing supplies as prices soar. Maksad suggested that Trump’s erratic public statements about negotiations with Iran may be part of a deliberate strategy to stabilize oil markets and extend the conflict. 'It’s in the interest of the administration to try and manage oil prices, manage the markets, keep them under control in order to prosecute this war longer,' he explained.
As U.S. forces consolidate their presence in the region, the situation remains precarious. The downing of a U.S. F-15 and A-10 aircraft by Iranian forces underscores the risks of further escalation, with search-and-rescue operations ongoing for a missing American airman.
