Texas GOP Primary Results Highlight Trump's Continued Influence
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton delivered a decisive blow to longtime Sen. John Cornyn in Tuesday’s GOP primary, winning by a staggering 28-point margin. The result marks the widest primary defeat for a sitting U.S. senator in nearly 50 years and underscores former President Donald Trump’s enduring grip on the Republican Party.
Cornyn, a four-term senator who consistently voted with Trump, was perceived as insufficiently aggressive in advancing the former president’s agenda. Trump’s endorsement of Paxton—who faces a history of legal and ethical controversies—proved pivotal in reshaping the race.
"Cornyn’s 28-point loss is the widest primary defeat for a sitting U.S. senator since 1978," noted political analyst Daniel Nichanian.
GOP Faces Financial and Strategic Challenges
The primary outcome has raised concerns among Republican strategists. Paxton, now the GOP nominee, faces Democrat James Talarico in November. Unlike Cornyn, Paxton has struggled with fundraising, forcing the GOP to allocate tens of millions more to the Texas Senate race.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune’s political operation and the National Republican Senatorial Committee previously supported Cornyn, but donors may hesitate to back Paxton. Trump’s political machine is expected to shoulder the financial burden of the campaign.
Trump’s Influence Remains Unquestioned
Despite historically low approval ratings and light primary turnout, Trump’s endorsement proved decisive. Paxton swept nearly all counties that previously favored Cornyn in the March primary runoff. Cornyn managed to win only three counties, including Dallas and Travis (Austin), but the margins were negligible in rural areas like Kenedy County, where only six of eight voters backed him.
This outcome further cements Trump’s dominance in the GOP but raises questions about the party’s ability to maintain its Senate majority in November. As Republicans grapple with internal divisions, the burden now falls on Trump to ensure Paxton’s victory in the general election.
