President Trump's envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner visited Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee on Thursday to consult with technical experts ahead of potential nuclear negotiations with Iran. The meeting underscores the White House's efforts to finalize a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Tehran, though critical details remain unresolved.
Preparing for Complex Talks
Approximately 100 technical experts, including specialists in uranium processing and centrifuge technology, have been assembled to support the negotiations. The Oak Ridge facility, a hub for nuclear expertise, previously handled materials from countries like Kazakhstan and Libya. 'This meeting doesn't guarantee a deal, but it shows negotiations are serious,' a U.S. official stated.
'These are the top nuclear experts in the U.S. who know how to do the technical things that a deal with Iran will entail,' a U.S. official said.
Key Disagreements Remain
Recent discussions have focused on a 60-day MOU proposal that includes reopening the Strait of Hormuz, allowing Iranian oil sales, and initiating talks on uranium stockpiles. However, disagreements persist over deadlines for uranium down-blending and the release of frozen Iranian funds. The U.S. insists on releasing funds only after concrete steps are taken, while Iran demands immediate access.
Next Steps
If negotiations progress, the expert team will develop plans for disposing of Iran's nuclear materials, limiting enrichment, and verifying compliance. The same experts recently assisted in recovering enriched uranium from Venezuela, showcasing their technical capabilities.
The White House and the National Nuclear Security Administration declined to comment on the meeting, leaving the outcome of the talks uncertain.
