President Trump told reporters on Saturday that he could order renewed military action against Iran if the country 'misbehaves.' This statement comes as the U.S. and Iran continue to exchange drafts of a framework agreement aimed at ending the ongoing conflict.
'If they misbehave, if they do something bad — but right now, we'll see. It's a possibility that could happen, certainly,' Trump said when asked about the potential for fresh strikes.
Current Negotiations
On Thursday, Iran presented the U.S. with a 14-point updated proposal for a framework agreement. According to sources briefed on the proposal, it includes a one-month deadline for negotiations to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, end the U.S. naval blockade, and permanently conclude the war in Iran and Lebanon. Only after such a deal is reached would another month of negotiations begin to address the nuclear program.
'I'm looking at it. I'll let you know about it later... They told me about the concept of the deal. They're going to give me the exact wording now,' Trump said on Saturday.
However, Trump later expressed skepticism on Truth Social, stating that he 'can't imagine that it would be acceptable' and emphasizing that Iran 'has not yet paid a big enough price for what they have done to Humanity, and the World, over the last 47 years.'
Military Preparedness
Trump was briefed on Thursday by CENTCOM commander Adm. Brad Cooper about new plans for military strikes against Iran. Cooper has since traveled to the region, meeting soldiers on the USS Tripoli in the Arabian Sea on Saturday.
The situation remains fluid, with Trump indicating that he will review Iran's proposal further, leaving open the possibility of escalating military action if he deems it necessary.
