Ukraine has introduced a new mid-range drone capability, transforming areas behind Russian lines once considered secure into contested zones. These drones, ranging from 20 to 300 kilometers from the front lines, are targeting key logistical hubs, command posts, and supply chains, disrupting Russia's ability to sustain its operations.

Strategic Shift

Taras Berezovets, head of Ukraine's Territorial Defense Forces' military cooperation department, emphasized the importance of this development at a recent drone summit in Latvia. "Now, we're fighting for the middle strike zone, between 50 and 150 kilometers," he said. "This area, which Russia considered safe, is now a new kill zone."

Impact on Russian Logistics

The mid-range drone strikes have forced Russia to push its logistics further back, complicating supply chains and delaying the delivery of armaments to front-line units. Berezovets noted that these attacks are not only practical but also psychologically destabilizing for Russian forces.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has highlighted the strategic advantage of these drones, stating that mid-strike assets are a priority for Ukraine. "Hits at distances of more than 20 kilometers are now twice as high as in March and four times as high as in February," Zelenskyy said. "And there will be more."

Battlefield Momentum

The Institute for the Study of War has acknowledged the effectiveness of Ukraine's mid-range drone strikes, crediting them with contributing to Russian territorial losses in April 2026. This marks the first net loss of territory controlled by Russian forces since Ukraine's incursion into Kursk Oblast in August 2024.

Ukraine's drone operators, equipped with advanced models like the US-made Hornet drone, are now able to target Russian stockpiles, vehicles, and command centers at previously untouchable distances, shifting the momentum on the battlefield.
