The United States military conducted precision strikes on Iranian missile launch sites and vessels engaged in mine-laying activities in southern Iran on Tuesday, according to US Central Command (Centcom). The action comes amid a fragile seven-week ceasefire between the two nations, which has yet to yield a comprehensive peace deal.
Ceasefire Remains Intact Despite Escalation
Centcom officials stressed that the strikes do not signify the end of the ceasefire, which has been in place since late October. The operation specifically targeted Iranian assets deemed a threat to regional stability, including missile launch facilities and boats attempting to lay mines in critical shipping lanes.
'These strikes were defensive in nature and aimed at neutralizing immediate threats,' a Centcom spokesperson stated. 'They do not represent a departure from our commitment to the ceasefire.'
Iranian Delegation Heads to Qatar for Talks
Meanwhile, Iranian negotiators arrived in Qatar on Monday to resume discussions on the future of Iran's nuclear program and the release of frozen assets. The talks, mediated by Qatari officials, are seen as a critical step in de-escalating tensions between Iran and the US.
Despite the military action, both sides have downplayed expectations of an imminent breakthrough. The Biden administration continues to emphasize diplomatic solutions while maintaining a robust military posture to deter Iranian aggression.
