The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) has deployed a third aircraft carrier to the Middle East, significantly increasing American firepower in the region as tensions with Iran continue to escalate. The USS George H.W. Bush, a Nimitz-class carrier, arrived in the Indian Ocean this week, joining the USS Gerald R. Ford in the Red Sea and the USS Abraham Lincoln in the Arabian Sea.

The deployment comes amid faltering negotiations between the US and Iran, as well as ongoing challenges in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical oil shipping route. CENTCOM announced the Bush’s arrival on Thursday, marking the largest buildup of American forces in the region since 2003. The carrier, which departed Virginia in late March, sailed around the coast of Africa before reaching its current position.

Strategic Pressure on Iran

The Abraham Lincoln is currently supporting the US blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, which involves over 10,000 troops, 100 fighter aircraft, and 17 warships. The blockade has redirected over 30 vessels, mostly oil tankers, and led to the interdiction of Iranian-flagged ships. On Sunday, the Navy destroyer USS Spruance fired on the M/V Touska, disabling the cargo ship by targeting its engine room.

President Donald Trump stated on Thursday that he had ordered the military to 'shoot and kill' any Iranian boats laying mines in the strait.

The US military is also conducting mine-clearing operations in the Strait of Hormuz, further intensifying its presence in the region. Meanwhile, Tehran has criticized the blockade as an obstacle to negotiations, which collapsed this week. Iran has renewed attacks on commercial vessels, raising doubts about the fragile ceasefire.

The USS George H.W. Bush’s deployment underscores America’s commitment to maintaining pressure on Iranian leadership. Aircraft carriers bring significant combat power, including dozens of strike aircraft equipped with precision-guided munitions, supported by electronic warfare jets and early warning systems. The US military buildup coincides with Operation Epic Fury, the largest American force deployment in the Middle East in nearly two decades.
