White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles is scheduled to meet with Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei to discuss the implications of the company's new Mythos AI model, which has raised significant concerns about national security and economic impacts. The meeting, confirmed by a White House official speaking anonymously, underscores the administration's focus on evaluating cutting-edge technologies that may be integrated into federal operations.
National Security Concerns
The Mythos model, unveiled by Anthropic on April 7, has been described as 'strikingly capable,' particularly in cybersecurity, where it reportedly surpasses human experts in identifying and exploiting vulnerabilities. This capability has attracted scrutiny from U.S. officials, including Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who previously sought to label Anthropic as a supply chain risk. Anthropic has challenged this designation in federal court, emphasizing its commitment to ensuring its technology is not used in fully autonomous weapons or American surveillance.
'Anytime Anthropic is scaring people, you have to ask, ‘Is this a tactic? Is this part of their Chicken Little routine? Or is it real?’’ said David Sacks, former White House AI and crypto czar, on a recent podcast. 'With cyber, I actually would give them credit in this case and say this is more on the real side.'
The U.K.'s AI Security Institute has also evaluated Mythos, noting its advancements over previous models and its potential to exploit systems with weak security measures. Meanwhile, Anthropic has engaged in preliminary discussions with the European Union regarding its AI technologies, though its advanced models are not yet available in Europe.
Ongoing Tensions
This meeting follows a contentious period between Anthropic and the Trump administration, which had attempted to bar federal agencies from using Anthropic’s products due to a contract dispute with the Pentagon. A federal judge later blocked this directive, allowing Anthropic to continue its work with government entities. The administration’s renewed interest in Anthropic’s AI models highlights the delicate balance between technological innovation and national security imperatives.
