Anduril Industries, the defense technology startup founded in 2017, has secured $5 billion in its latest funding round, doubling its valuation to $61 billion. CEO Brian Schimpf detailed the company's vision for the future of warfare in a letter to investors, emphasizing the role of software-enabled systems and deep-sea operations.
Software Takes Center Stage
Schimpf argued that future conflicts will be defined by forces capable of coordinating large numbers of connected, software-enabled systems rather than relying solely on expensive hardware. Anduril's Lattice OS, a digital command-and-control platform, integrates data from drones, cameras, sensors, and radar systems to enable faster decision-making and adaptability.
"Future conflicts will be decided by the ability to generate targeting faster, deliver effects at range in volume, and deny the same to our adversaries,"Schimpf wrote.
Deep-Sea Warfare Gains Importance
Advances in autonomous sensing will make it "nearly impossible" to conceal military activity across air, ground, and surface domains, according to Schimpf. This will elevate the deep sea as a critical battlefield where sensing remains challenging.
"Underwater operations would become disproportionately important,"he said, highlighting the need for militaries to improve dispersion and resilience above ground.
Shifting Alliance Structures
Schimpf described a new Cold War era, with the U.S.-China relationship characterized by containment and managed competition. He noted that China's military buildup and U.S. hemispheric defense priorities will require allies to assume greater responsibility for regional deterrence.
"The world had entered a new Cold War period,"he wrote, predicting regional conflicts and alliance shifts.
Production Scalability as a Key Factor
The ability to rapidly rebuild combat power and scale technological advancements will be crucial for deterrence. Schimpf emphasized that
"the side that adapts fastest shapes the terms of competition,"underscoring the need for scalable production capabilities in future conflicts.
