Eileen Wang, the mayor of Arcadia, California, has resigned from her position and agreed to plead guilty to acting as an illegal agent for the Chinese government. Wang, 58, was charged in April with one count of violating U.S. law by operating on behalf of a foreign government without prior notification.

According to federal officials, Wang and a colleague, Yaoning 'Mike' Sun, collaborated with Chinese government officials from late 2020 through 2022 to promote Beijing's interests in the U.S. Their activities included sharing pro-China propaganda through the news website U.S. News Center, which targeted the Chinese American community. Wang also amplified a Los Angeles Times op-ed defending China's policies in Xinjiang, where U.S. and international authorities have accused Beijing of genocide and crimes against humanity.
'She apologizes and is sorry for the mistakes she has made in her personal life,' Wang's attorneys said in a statement.

City Manager Dominic Lazzaretto confirmed that no city finances or staff were involved in Wang's activities, emphasizing that the charges pertain to individual conduct that ceased after her swearing-in in December 2022. Arcadia, located 13 miles northeast of Los Angeles, is home to approximately 53,000 residents and has a predominantly Asian population, including a significant Chinese community.
Wang faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in federal prison. Her plea agreement signals the latest in a series of cases targeting individuals acting as foreign agents, underscoring ongoing concerns about foreign influence in U.S. political and social spheres.
