A fragile ceasefire agreement in the ongoing Iran conflict has left global energy markets in a state of uncertainty, with contradictory statements about Iran's control over the critical Strait of Hormuz. The ceasefire, announced on April 7, has been met with skepticism by geopolitical experts, who argue that it may only delay further military escalation or strengthen Iran's grip on global energy trade.
Market Reactions and Expert Predictions
Bob McNally, former White House energy advisor and founder of Rapidan Energy Group, described the ceasefire as 'vague' and 'fragile,' noting that Iran’s contradictory statements undermine its stability. 'We think the odds favor this ceasefire either not ever sticking or unraveling if it does,' McNally stated. Despite a temporary drop in oil prices following the announcement, experts warn that the situation could worsen before it improves.
'The only thing we know for sure is the president called off a larger attack,' McNally added. 'I am amazed at the market’s willingness to price in relief so willingly.'
Iran’s Control Over the Strait
The Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway for global energy supplies, remains under Iran’s control. Iran has agreed to open the strait 'via coordination with Iran’s Armed Forces,' but conflicting reports about tolls and fees have added to the uncertainty. Meanwhile, vessel traffic through the strait has plummeted, with only 10% of typical flows observed briefly in early April before ceasing again.
Claudio Galimberti, chief economist at Rystad Energy, warned that a return to normalcy is unlikely before late 2026. 'The normalization of the Strait of Hormuz is still far, far away,' Galimberti said. 'It’s a very fragile situation.'
Next Steps
U.S. officials, including Vice President JD Vance and special envoy Jared Kushner, are scheduled to meet with Iran in Islamabad on April 11 for further negotiations. However, with Israel continuing its attacks in Lebanon and Iran threatening to withdraw from the ceasefire, the path to a lasting agreement remains fraught with challenges.
