The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has publicly criticized Democratic governors Gavin Newsom of California, JB Pritzker of Illinois, and Maura Healey of Massachusetts for failing to honor ICE detainers, releasing criminal aliens back into American communities. DHS spokespersons argue that this practice endangers public safety by allowing individuals convicted of serious crimes, including murder and sexual offenses, to reenter society.

Public Safety Concerns

According to DHS, ignoring ICE detainers has led to the release of individuals such as Hector Grijalba-Sernas from Mexico, arrested for lewd acts with a child under 14, and Xujin An from China, arrested for sexual battery. Both were released despite ICE detainers and are now in federal custody. DHS emphasizes that seven out of ten of the safest cities in the U.S. cooperate with ICE, highlighting the benefits of such partnerships for public safety.

"Criminal illegal aliens should not be released from jails back onto our streets to terrorize more innocent Americans," a DHS spokesperson stated.

Call for Cooperation

DHS has issued a personal appeal to sanctuary state leaders, urging them to honor ICE detainers and collaborate with federal authorities to protect American communities. The agency points to over 33,000 criminal aliens in California's custody alone, stressing the need for unified action to address the issue.

Despite current tensions, DHS remains hopeful that these governors will reconsider their policies and prioritize the safety and security of American citizens by working with federal immigration enforcement agencies.
