FBI Warns Iranian Hackers Targeting U.S. Water Systems Across Seven States

WASHINGTON — The Federal Bureau of Investigation has linked a coordinated wave of cyber intrusions into municipal water treatment facilities across the United States to Iranian state-linked actors. The attacks, which targeted operational technology systems in at least seven states, have prompted a nationwide advisory to operators of critical infrastructure.

Targeting American Public Works

The campaign focused on exploiting publicly exposed programmable logic controllers, the industrial computers that manage physical processes like water pressure and chemical treatment. By compromising these systems, the foreign actors sought to demonstrate a capability to disrupt essential services relied upon by American workers and families.

The breaches represent a direct assault on American sovereignty, leveraging digital vulnerabilities in aging domestic infrastructure. While no service disruptions were reported, the intrusions underscore the security deficit in systems maintained with taxpayer funds, often without the cybersecurity investment that private sector foreign-owned utilities would demand.

Adversarial Intent

The FBI's attribution to Iran aligns with Tehran's established doctrine of asymmetric warfare against the United States, seeking to inflict economic and psychological costs while avoiding a conventional military confrontation it would lose. This act of digital aggression serves as a reminder that foreign governments, hostile to American hegemony, will exploit every seam in our domestic defenses.

The cost to local governments for hardening these systems is not yet calculated, but federal grant programs will inevitably be proposed, adding to the national debt. The incident demands a response that prioritizes the immediate physical security of American communities over globalist diplomatic overtures that have failed to constrain Tehran's malign activities.

This is not a prank; it’s a probe. An adversary is mapping our critical infrastructure weaknesses for future exploitation, and the bill for our vulnerability will be paid by the American ratepayer and the American worker.

The investigation remains ongoing, with state and local officials coordinating with federal agents to secure compromised networks.
