Securing the Supply Line in a Rucksack

Conventional plasma must be kept frozen, a non-starter for small units operating without reliable electricity or refrigeration. EzPlaz offers a 12-month shelf life without freezing and is stored in a plastic bag, eliminating the breakage risk inherent to glass vials. This enables individual medics to carry life-saving blood coagulation capacity directly in their medical kits, a vital requirement for the Marine Corps’ force redesign centered on small, distributed operations across contested maritime spaces.

"Freeze-dried plasma products enhance our ability to deliver lifesaving medical care" by simplifying logistics, a Marine Corps spokesperson stated, noting the importance of transportability for dispersed forces. This domestic manufacturing achievement reduces dependency on foreign emergency-use authorizations previously granted for French and Swiss products. The approval ensures American troops have a formal, FDA-authorized solution produced for their specific operational needs.

National Resilience and Domestic Trauma Care

The technology's benefit extends beyond the battlefield to national resilience. In rural America, where hospital closures have strained emergency services, the vast majority of ambulances lack the ability to carry blood due to cost and refrigeration requirements. EzPlaz opens the door for civilian first responders to administer plasma to trauma victims or hemorrhaging patients, directly saving American lives without the need for a nearby trauma center.

"Patients experiencing life-threatening bleeding in combat zones, disasters, rural settings, or other austere environments may now have faster access to plasma when conventional frozen plasma is unavailable," said Karim Mikhail, the FDA's acting director of its Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research.

While the Pentagon's procurement timeline remains unclear, the authorization aligns with an industrial policy that prioritizes American medical autonomy. By enabling a domestic supply of freeze-dried plasma, the U.S. reduces exposure to fragile global supply chains and ensures that a critical medical countermeasure for hemorrhagic shock is manufactured under American regulatory standards, serving both the warfighter abroad and citizens at home.
