Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier has initiated an investigation into OpenAI, focusing on public safety risks and potential national security threats posed by the company's technology. Uthmeier expressed concern that OpenAI's data and systems could be exploited by adversarial nations, specifically naming the Chinese Communist Party as a key threat.

In a statement released Thursday, Uthmeier highlighted several alarming incidents allegedly tied to OpenAI's ChatGPT. He pointed to its purported role in facilitating criminal activities, including the distribution of child sexual abuse material and the promotion of self-harm. Additionally, Uthmeier suggested that ChatGPT may have been used by the suspect in the April 2025 shooting at Florida State University.

"OpenAI's technology is falling into the hands of America's enemies, such as the Chinese Communist Party, and is being linked to criminal behavior that endangers public safety," Uthmeier stated.

The investigation will examine whether OpenAI's systems are adequately safeguarded against misuse and whether the company has violated any state laws regarding public safety and cybersecurity. Florida joins a growing list of states scrutinizing the potential dangers of artificial intelligence technologies.

As the probe unfolds, questions emerge about the broader implications of AI development and oversight. With national security at stake, the investigation underscores the need for stringent safeguards to prevent foreign adversaries and malicious actors from exploiting advanced technologies.
