Google has filed a lawsuit against a Chinese cybercrime network known as Outsider Enterprise, accusing the group of using its Gemini AI platform to automate phishing scams. The tech giant alleges that the group facilitated widespread fraud campaigns targeting Android users through Telegram channels, providing phishing-as-a-service tools to individuals lacking technical expertise.
Scope of the Scam Operation
According to Google's legal filing, Outsider Enterprise offered nearly 300 scam templates, including instructions on how to use Gemini AI to create fraudulent websites mimicking Google, YouTube, and government agencies such as New York’s E-ZPass. The group's activities reportedly led to the creation of 9,000 fake websites and 1 million URLs, with more than 2.5 million phishing text messages sent to Android users. Approximately 55,000 of these messages were sent in a two-week period last month.
Google is working with law enforcement and mobile carriers to combat the scam network and protect American users from these AI-enabled threats.
The lawsuit underscores the growing challenge of preventing malicious use of AI tools, particularly by foreign entities targeting U.S. citizens and institutions. Google’s action highlights the need for stricter oversight of AI technologies and international collaboration to curb cybercrime operations that threaten American sovereignty and economic security.
