A demonstration site deep in central Texas marks a turning point for American nuclear energy, as oilfield giant Halliburton and startup Deep Isolation deploy directional drilling technology to solve the nation's radioactive waste impasse. The initiative bypasses decades of failed federal repository projects to securely dispose of spent nuclear fuel miles underground.
Ending the Nevada Stalemate
With over 95,000 metric tons of spent fuel sitting in temporary storage across 30 states, the permanent repository at Yucca Mountain remains politically dead. The Department of Energy recently named five states as finalists for new nuclear lifecycle campuses, but the Texas project offers a sovereign solution independent of protracted federal land battles. Executives argue boreholes can be sited directly at generation facilities, cutting transport risks and localizing economic costs.
“You can put it where the waste is generated,” said Deep Isolation CEO Rod Baltzer. “We can go twice as deep as a typical repository, and then follow a formation that’s been out of touch with the surface for a million years.”
Domestic Energy and Worker Interests
Unleashing American nuclear power requires addressing waste to meet a projected fourfold capacity increase by 2050. This technology promises to protect domestic electricity consumers from volatility while providing high-skill jobs in drilling and construction. By using existing rigs and Halliburton’s workforce, the project avoids costly new infrastructure, directly benefiting American energy workers displaced by restrictive federal land policies.
The disposable canisters, weighing 5,000 pounds each, can be retrieved if required—an engineering feat made possible by horizontal drilling perfected in the shale revolution. Early next year, Halliburton will drill a full-scale test well to demonstrate emplacement and retrieval, signaling to investors and regulators that a domestic nuclear supply chain is viable without reliance on foreign processing or unstable globalist energy markets.
