Customs and Border Protection officials confirmed Wednesday that Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents have been temporarily reassigned to Transportation Security Administration duties for the immediate future. The move comes amid a staff shortage at TSA checkpoints nationwide.

Enforcement Concerns Raised

The temporary reassignment raises questions about ICE's capacity to maintain immigration enforcement operations. Former Trump campaign spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt questioned whether deportations would decline as a result, stating

'Clearly this will cause a short term decrease in enforcement as resources are stretched but hopefully this situation is remedied quickly.'

ICE officials emphasized that the reassignment is temporary and that core enforcement priorities will not be compromised. The agency maintains that internal efficiency measures will allow continued operations of removal proceedings and deportation enforcement.

Staffing Crisis Impacts Border Security

The TSA staffing shortage comes as the Biden administration continues to grapple with border security challenges. Record migrant encounters at the southern border have strained immigration enforcement resources throughout the Department of Homeland Security apparatus.

Congressional Republicans have criticized the administration for failing to adequately staff Department of Homeland Security agencies, arguing that such resource diversions undermine national security priorities.
