Lu Jianwang, a 64-year-old New York resident, was convicted on Wednesday of acting as an unregistered agent of the Chinese government. Federal prosecutors in Brooklyn revealed that Jianwang operated an alleged "secret police station" in Manhattan’s Chinatown neighborhood, established in 2022 at the behest of Beijing.

Undisclosed Operations on U.S. Soil

According to court documents, Jianwang failed to notify the U.S. attorney general of his role as a Chinese agent, a legal requirement for foreign operatives. The station, located in a bustling area of Chinatown, was reportedly used to assist Beijing in its overseas operations.

"Lu Jianwang’s actions represent a direct violation of U.S. sovereignty," said a spokesperson for the Department of Justice. "Foreign governments cannot operate covertly on American soil."

Targeting Pro-Democracy Activists

Prosecutors also revealed that Jianwang assisted Chinese authorities in locating a pro-democracy activist residing in California, raising concerns about Beijing’s efforts to silence dissidents abroad. This conviction highlights ongoing tensions between the U.S. and China over espionage and foreign interference.

The case underscores the growing need for vigilance against foreign infiltration, particularly as Beijing continues to expand its influence operations globally. The Department of Justice has reiterated its commitment to protecting American sovereignty and ensuring transparency in foreign agent activities.
