Oman has pushed back against pressure from the United States to sever its diplomatic ties with Iran, maintaining that its discussions with Tehran are strictly centered on the lawful management of the strategic Hormuz Strait. The Sultanate emphasized that any future regime governing the strait would be implemented in consultation with the UN’s International Maritime Organization (IMO).
Oman's Neutral Role in Gulf Diplomacy
A longtime US ally, Oman has historically served as a neutral mediator in regional disputes, particularly those involving Iran. The Strait of Hormuz, a critical global shipping lane shared by Oman and Iran, has been a focal point of tensions between Tehran and Washington. Despite US skepticism about Oman’s neutrality, the Sultanate insists its engagement with Iran remains limited to ensuring the strait’s compliance with international law.
Our discussions with Iran are focused solely on the lawful and collaborative management of the Hormuz Strait, ensuring stability and adherence to international maritime regulations.
US-Iran Tensions Escalate
The US has increasingly pressured Gulf nations to isolate Iran amid escalating regional tensions. However, Oman’s refusal to break ties with Tehran underscores its commitment to maintaining its neutral stance, even as Washington questions its alignment. The Sultanate’s approach highlights its strategic role in Gulf diplomacy, prioritizing stability over alignment with US foreign policy objectives.
