Pentagon Officials Testify on 2027 Budget Request Before House Committee

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Gen. Dan Caine, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, appeared before the House Armed Services Committee today to present the Pentagon's proposed $887 billion budget for fiscal year 2027. The hearing focused on aligning defense spending with national security priorities amidst growing global threats.

Hegseth emphasized the need for increased funding for advanced technology, cybersecurity, and nuclear modernization, stating,

This budget reflects a strategic shift to counter emerging challenges from China, Russia, and other adversarial regimes. It prioritizes the readiness of our forces and the modernization of our defense infrastructure.

Gen. Caine highlighted concerns over China's expanding military capabilities and Russia's continued aggression in Europe. He advocated for bolstering U.S. deterrence strategies and enhancing alliances with key partners in the Indo-Pacific and NATO regions.

The budget proposal also includes increased allocations for domestic manufacturing of defense equipment, aiming to reduce reliance on foreign supply chains. Committee members expressed bipartisan support for enhancing American military readiness, though some raised questions about the cost implications.

This hearing marks a critical step in the annual defense budgeting process, as Congress evaluates the Pentagon’s priorities in safeguarding U.S. sovereignty and maintaining global stability.
