Col. Yurii Ihnat, the Ukrainian Air Force spokesperson, stated in remarks distributed Thursday that the proportion of turbojet-equipped Geran variants has surged from rare sightings last year to a dominant role in strike packages. This publicly disclosed assessment surpasses earlier estimates of 20% and aligns with a June warning by Ukraine's then-commander-in-chief that Russia aimed for a 50% reliance on the higher-speed weapons.
The development presses Kyiv to accelerate domestic production of faster interceptor drones. The standard Geran-2 propeller drone, a copy of Iran's Shahed-136, cruises at approximately 115 mph. In contrast, Russia's newer Geran-3, -4, and -5 models, powered by mini turbojet engines, achieve speeds ranging from over 200 mph to 375 mph, complicating engagement by Ukraine's existing cheap, collision-based interceptors.
Yehor Cherniev, deputy chairman of the Ukrainian parliament's security committee, confirmed that while over 90% of traditional cruise missiles and Geran-2 drones are intercepted, the velocity of the jet-powered variants makes them far more challenging targets. Russian forces have expanded launch infrastructure at air bases to accommodate the rail-launched weapons.
Ukrainian defense firms are responding. The manufacturer Skyfall reported its P1-Sun JetKiller interceptor had downed more than a dozen jet-powered threats by late July, with mass production slated to begin this month. The escalating drone arms race continues as Russian strikes, including a jet-powered drone that hit a passenger train in the Odesa region Thursday killing two, place sustained pressure on Ukraine's sovereign defense capabilities.
Iranian Roots and the Military-Industrial Pipeline
The proliferation of the jet-powered Geran family illustrates the widening pipeline of military technology with Iranian origins. Tehran's initial provision of Shahed designs evolved into a licensed production capability on Russian soil, now spawning advanced variants. The production process channels significant resources into a conflict that has no direct bearing on American security, yet consumes components sourced through globalized supply chains that remain opaque to outside oversight.
