Russia is increasingly deploying operator-controlled Shahed drones in its ongoing conflict with Ukraine, according to Ukrainian defense officials. These drones, previously launched with pre-programmed coordinates, are now being guided in real-time by Russian operators, allowing them to strike moving targets and evade Ukrainian interception attempts.
Oleksiy Vyskub, Ukraine's first deputy defense minister, revealed that the operator-guided Shaheds represent a heightened threat to Ukrainian military and civilian infrastructure. Unlike their autonomous counterparts, these drones can maneuver dynamically, flying at low altitudes and avoiding air defenses. 'Russian operators can now target dynamic assets, including air defense crews and vehicles,' Vyskub stated.
'The new ability for the pilot to maneuver this drone enables the Shahed to target many moving military targets such as large vehicles, military systems, and people,' said Samuel Bendett, an expert on Russian drones.
Russia has equipped the Shaheds with mesh modems and relay systems, enabling operators to control them from hundreds of miles away. This technological upgrade transforms the Shaheds into precision-strike weapons, capable of delivering significant damage with their large warheads. Recent attacks on Ukraine's rail network highlight the destructive potential of these operator-guided drones.
Defensive Challenges for Ukraine
The operator-controlled Shaheds pose a major challenge to Ukrainian air defenses. Russian pilots can use the drones' built-in cameras to execute evasive maneuvers against interceptors, making them harder to neutralize. Some Shaheds have even been observed carrying air-to-air missiles, further complicating Ukraine's defensive efforts.
Mykhailo Fedorov, Ukraine's defense minister, reported a 35% month-over-month increase in Shahed launches since the start of the year, with Russia launching over 6,500 drones in recent months. This escalation underscores Moscow's growing investment in drone production and its strategic focus on expanding Ukraine's military vulnerabilities.
