A Russian drone launched against Ukraine struck an apartment building in Galați, Romania, on Tuesday, leaving two civilians injured and escalating tensions between NATO and Moscow. Romania, a NATO member state, immediately summoned the Russian ambassador and called a meeting of its national security council to determine its response.
Romania Vows 'Proportionate Measures'
Romanian President Nicușor Dan condemned the attack, stating that the incident was a direct consequence of Russia’s 'war of aggression' against Ukraine. 'Romania will not accept, in any way, the war of aggression waged by Russia against Ukraine to be transferred on to its citizens,' Dan said. He pledged to 'order proportionate measures' in response to the strike.
'Russia’s war of aggression has crossed yet another line. A Russian drone incursion struck a densely populated area in Romania, injuring civilians. On EU territory.'
The drone crash marks the first time a Russian attack has directly impacted NATO territory since the invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022. EU President Ursula von der Leyen echoed Romania’s condemnation, vowing that the bloc would 'keep increasing the pressure on Russia.'
Escalating Tensions on NATO's Eastern Flank
The strike underscores the risks of spillover from Russia’s ongoing conflict with Ukraine. Romania, located on NATO’s eastern flank, has been a vocal supporter of Ukraine and a key logistical hub for Western military aid. The incident highlights the widening geopolitical ramifications of the war as Western allies continue to strengthen their response to Russian aggression.
