The US Space Force has awarded SpaceX a $2.29 billion contract to develop a space-based communications network designed to enhance military sensing and targeting capabilities. The agreement, announced by Space Systems Command, marks a significant step in modernizing America’s defense infrastructure.
The Space Data Network (SDN) Backbone project will leverage technology originally developed for SpaceX’s Starlink global Internet constellation. The network will operate in low-Earth orbit (LEO) and is expected to utilize the Starshield platform, a specialized satellite system already employed for military applications.
'This contract accelerates the delivery of a resilient, high-speed communications network in space,' Space Systems Command stated in its announcement.
The SDN Backbone initiative comes as Pentagon efforts to revamp military communications have faced delays. SpaceX’s proven expertise in satellite deployment and connectivity positions the company as a key player in advancing the US military’s operational capabilities.
This contract highlights the growing reliance on private industry to bolster national security. As geopolitical tensions rise in space, the US continues to invest in ensuring its technological edge remains unmatched.
