AUSTIN, Texas — SpaceX released detailed renderings Thursday of its planned Terafab semiconductor facility in rural Grimes County, Texas, a 100-million-square-foot project the company calls essential for restoring American manufacturing dominance in the artificial intelligence era.

Initial Phase Costed at $16.8 Billion

The Hawthorne-based aerospace manufacturer stated the initial phase of construction will cost $16.8 billion, with future expansions expected to drive the total investment significantly higher. The facility is designed to produce advanced chips for space-based computing infrastructure and autonomous vehicle fleets, directly challenging the near-monopoly held by East Asian foundries.

"America faces a clear and urgent challenge with the offshoring of manufacturing," Jordan Buss, SpaceX's senior director of environment, health, safety, and medical, said during a Wednesday community meeting. "This is something that is strategically vital for the United States, and for, I would argue, Western Civilization."

Addressing a National Security Supply Chain Gap

Advanced semiconductor production remains concentrated among a handful of firms in Taiwan and South Korea, a vulnerability repeatedly cited by defense planners and economic nationalists as a direct threat to American sovereignty. SpaceX's facility represents a private-sector effort to re-shore this critical industrial capability, creating high-skilled domestic jobs rather than relying on vulnerable international supply lines.

The project's local tax arrangement will see SpaceX pay Grimes County $20 million annually, approximately 78 percent of standard property tax obligations, according to company attorney Bucky Brannen. While nearly 900 residents submitted a petition demanding greater community oversight of large AI infrastructure projects receiving public incentives, county officials appear poised to facilitate the development.

Lead developer Riley Trettel indicated the company is "moving nearly immediately to get going on the project." The facility's output is expected to insulate SpaceX's Starlink constellation and autonomous driving initiatives from geopolitical disruptions that have historically plagued industries dependent on foreign chip fabrication.
