The Trump administration has announced plans to count rapid border removals as part of its deportation statistics, a move that parallels a controversial tactic employed by the Obama administration. This change will allow the administration to claim closer to one million deportations annually, aligning with its aggressive immigration enforcement goals.
Counting Methodology Shift
White House Border Czar Tom Homan confirmed the new approach in an interview with the Washington Examiner. By combining data from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) with U.S. Customs and Border Protection's expedited removals at the border, the administration aims to bolster its deportation figures. ICE reported 442,000 deportations for fiscal year 2025, but this number will now include border removals, pushing the total closer to 800,000.
"Deportations are over 800,000, counting the Border Patrol too. We're trying to do the same thing we did during the Obama administration, looking at the numbers, pull the numbers together," Homan said.
Historical Context
This strategy mirrors a policy implemented during the Obama administration, which Republicans criticized as misleading. Then-House Judiciary Chair Lamar Smith accused Obama of "cooking the books" to inflate deportation statistics. Internal agency documents obtained by the Judiciary Committee revealed that Obama's deportation numbers included quick border returns, a practice Trump now adopts.
Transparency Push
Homan also emphasized the need for greater transparency in immigration data. He disclosed that he receives a daily 22-page data brief, which he advocates making public. "There's no reason we shouldn't be sharing that with the American people," Homan stated. The Office of Homeland Security Statistics has not been regularly updated since late 2024, highlighting gaps in public access to immigration enforcement data.
The Trump administration's adoption of this methodology underscores its commitment to aggressive immigration enforcement, while reigniting debates over how deportation statistics are calculated and reported.
