Recent comments by President Donald Trump suggesting that U.S. arms sales to Taiwan serve as a "very good negotiating chip" in dealings with China have sparked concern among Taiwan’s leadership and heightened tensions in the region. Trump made the statement during a Fox News interview following his high-stakes visit to China last week.

China views Taiwan as a breakaway province, a stance underpinned by Beijing’s long-standing threat of military force to reclaim the island. While the U.S. does not formally recognize Taiwan as an independent nation, it remains the island’s strongest ally and primary source of military support. Trump, however, indicated that U.S. arms sales to Taiwan could be contingent on negotiations with China. "I’m holding that in abeyance and it depends on China," Trump said, referring to a stalled $14 billion arms package. "It’s a very good negotiating chip for us, frankly."

Taiwan’s Sovereignty at Stake

Analysts warn that Trump’s approach risks sidelining Taiwan in negotiations, effectively making the island a bargaining chip rather than a participant. "Taiwan, instead of being at the negotiating table, is on the menu," said William Yang, a Northeast Asia senior analyst for the International Crisis Group. Taiwan’s presidential office sought to reassure the public, emphasizing that U.S. policy toward the island remains unchanged. "The Republic of China is a sovereign, independent, democratic country," said spokesperson Karen Kuo.

Microchip Industry in the Crosshairs

Trump also raised eyebrows by urging Taiwan’s microchip manufacturers—the world’s largest producer of advanced semiconductors—to relocate operations to the U.S. "I’d like to see everybody making chips over in Taiwan come into America," Trump said, framing such a move as "the greatest thing you can do." Taiwanese chipmaker TSMC has already committed $165 billion to a U.S. facility in Arizona, part of a broader $250 billion investment pledge under a recent trade agreement.

Trump’s remarks come as tensions over Taiwan continue to escalate. Chinese President Xi Jinping recently warned Trump of potential "clashes and even conflicts" if the Taiwan issue is mishandled, underscoring Beijing’s determination to assert its claims over the island.
