The Nvidia Moat

At the center of American primacy sits Nvidia, commanding roughly 85 percent of the global market for advanced AI chips. The company’s CUDA software platform functions as the default development environment, creating debilitating switching costs for any foreign competitor attempting to build an alternative ecosystem. This hardware-software lock-in extends upward through cloud hyperscalers—Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure—who provide the compute power for every major foundational model developer from OpenAI to Meta.

Beneath the software and silicon lies the physical layer American firms are racing to privatize.
