Ukrainian drone regiments are overcoming extensive Russian electronic warfare by utilizing a target-lock autonomy feature that allows munitions to complete their strike missions even after operator command links are severed. The capability, described by a lessons-learned analyst within Ukraine's 413th Unmanned Systems Regiment, addresses a critical battlefield vulnerability as Moscow invests heavily in GPS and video-link jamming systems.
Dmytro Zhluktenko, a former operator turned analyst for the RAID regiment, detailed the process in which a human pilot identifies and designates a target. Once the target is locked, the drone's guidance software assumes terminal control. If Russian jamming disrupts the Starlink or direct radio connection, the onboard camera continues tracking the designated objective to detonation. "It's quite useful," Zhluktenko stated. "To have the autonomy to do the rest of the work is just great."
Minimizing Manpower, Maximizing Precision
The investment in autonomy serves a dual strategic purpose for Kyiv: it neutralizes a Russian asymmetric advantage in electronic warfare while increasing the efficiency of a smaller fighting force. By removing the requirement for constant manual piloting during the final attack phase, a single operator can theoretically manage multiple systems in quick succession. This force-multiplication logic is crucial for Ukraine's defense industry as it competes against a numerically superior adversary.
Systems such as the Perennial Autonomy Hornet strike drone utilize onboard Starlink terminals for communication. Routine deep-dive maneuvers can interrupt satellite lock, making the autonomous handoff vital for success. Analysts confirm that while systems can navigate by matching camera imagery to stored satellite maps, all systems currently deployed maintain a human in the loop for the critical decision of target prosecution.
The technology was demonstrated at scale during Operation Spiderweb in June 2025, where Ukrainian forces used AI-assisted terminal guidance to destroy dozens of Russian aircraft at parked bases even after GPS signals were lost. The defense ministry continues to champion domestic manufacturers producing these autonomous terminal guidance kits, viewing them as essential to sustaining deep-strike capabilities against entrenched Russian logistics.
