The Taliban regime announced the release of Dennis Coyle, a 64-year-old American detainee, on Tuesday, marking a significant development in U.S.-Afghanistan relations. The release comes less than two weeks after the Trump administration designated Afghanistan as a sponsor of wrongful detention.

Diplomatic Pressure Leads to Release

Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who met with Coyle’s family earlier this year, played a pivotal role in securing the detainee’s freedom. In a statement, Rubio celebrated the release but emphasized that more work remains to bring home other Americans unjustly detained by the Taliban. "Dennis joins over 100 Americans who have been freed in the past 15 months," Rubio said, calling the move "a positive step."

"The Taliban must end their practice of hostage diplomacy," Rubio stated.

Coyle’s Detention and Background

According to the Taliban’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Coyle was arrested in January 2025 for "violating the enforced laws of Afghanistan." Coyle, a Colorado native, had spent nearly two decades working legally in the country, maintaining positive relationships with Afghan government ministries, according to his family.

The Trump administration’s designation of Afghanistan as a sponsor of wrongful detention underscores its commitment to protecting American citizens abroad and holding regimes accountable for unjust practices. The State Department has yet to comment publicly on the matter.
